Fifteen lucky members met on a sunny July 18 at the beautiful Quabbin Reservoir in central Massachusetts to learn about water quality and conservation at the Quabbin Park Visitor Center in Belchertown, Massachusetts. Dale Monette, Visitor Center Coordinator, provided the group with an informative slide presentation of the history of the development of the 39-square-mile Quabbin Reservoir (the area was once covered by scenic farmlands and rolling hills), watershed management, and the successful reintroduction of the bald eagle to the Quabbin. The mainly forested expanse is a Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) watershed protection area providing drinking water primarily for the greater Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. Dale entertained the group with personal anecdotes and answers to all of our questions. Following the morning program, a lunch and chapter business meeting was held under a large, shady oak – it was hot and muggy! – at the summit of Quabbin Mountain overlooking the reservoir and the Connecticut River Valley.
